Negotiation & inspection checklist

Questions to ask the seller
- Can you show Transportstyrelsen's "Fordonets skulder" (vehicle debt) service, or otherwise confirm there is no outstanding vehicle tax, congestion charge, or parking-fine debt tied to this vehicle? Unpaid vehicle debt transfers to the new owner in Sweden, not the previous one, and can lead to Kronofogden seizing the car.
- Provide service receipts showing the last oil change and the mileage when filters (air and fuel) were last replaced.
- Has this VIN had the manufacturer recall work done? Please provide Volvo's VIN-check/recall confirmation or service-stamp documentation.
- Provide any accident or bodywork invoices and a full service book if available (the registry banner is a single-source check).
- How long has the car been avställd (deregistered) at the dealer's lot, and was it driven recently for prep/inspection?
- Confirm the tow hitch (dragkrok) has been inspected and that electrical tow sockets and 7-seat mechanisms function correctly.
What to check in person
- Never pay a deposit or the full price before you've seen and test-driven the car in person — be wary of pressure to decide immediately ("today only" pricing), or a seller who avoids meeting or an independent inspection.
- Pay by bank transfer or Swish, never cash to someone you haven't met or verified, and complete the registered ownership transfer (ägarbyte) digitally at handover rather than leaving it for later.
- Verify oil level, fresh oil smell, and check for leaks/pooling under the engine after a test drive.
- Inspect engine bay fuel hoses and surrounding area for signs of leakage or recent repairs (recall-related).
- Request and inspect all service receipts; confirm dates/mileages for oil, air filter, fuel filter and brake-fluid changes.
- Check underbody for corrosion or repaired collision damage and compare with any bodywork invoices.
- Test panoramic roof for smooth operation and check seals for leaks; test all 7 seats for proper mounting and seatbelt function.
- Test tow hitch mechanical fit and electrical trailer socket operation.
- Take a mixed-route test drive (city + highway) to check gearbox smoothness, turbo response and braking feel.
