Questions to ask the seller
- Can you show Transportstyrelsen's "Fordonets skulder" (vehicle debt) service, or otherwise confirm there is no outstanding vehicle tax, congestion charge, or parking-fine debt tied to this vehicle? Unpaid vehicle debt transfers to the new owner in Sweden, not the previous one, and can lead to Kronofogden seizing the car.
- Please confirm the exact engine/variant (is this a 530d?) and show the registration document (del 1) or dealer spec confirming it.
- Has the airbag inflator recall been performed on this VIN? Provide written proof from BMW or a stamped service record.
- Provide full service history and receipts, especially for turbo, DPF, and major services.
- Why are there 6 registered owners? Please provide ägarbyte/ownership-change records or explain the ownership timeline.
- Is the car currently avställd in dealer inventory, and if so until when? (legal status shows 'avställd')
What to check in person
- Never pay a deposit or the full price before you've seen and test-driven the car in person — be wary of pressure to decide immediately ("today only" pricing), or a seller who avoids meeting or an independent inspection.
- Pay by bank transfer or Swish, never cash to someone you haven't met or verified, and complete the registered ownership transfer (ägarbyte) digitally at handover rather than leaving it for later.
- Confirm VIN on vehicle matches registration document and the ad; have dealer run BMW's VIN recall lookup in front of you.
- Check for oil leaks and turbo shaft play; ask for turbo service history or a recent compressor/play test.
- Verify DPF health: ask dealer to show recent regeneration history or scan logs; check for heavy smoke on acceleration.
- Test-drive focusing on gearbox smoothness (automatic shifting) and any clunks from suspension; inspect for worn bushings.
- Check brakes for pad/thickness and rotor condition and listen for vibrations under braking.
- Ask to see service receipts for any major repairs and the most recent service; verify mileage entries line up with receipts.
- Confirm airbag-recall repair documentation or a dealer printout showing remedy performed for this VIN.
