Questions to ask the seller
- Can you show Transportstyrelsen's "Fordonets skulder" (vehicle debt) service, or otherwise confirm there is no outstanding vehicle tax, congestion charge, or parking-fine debt tied to this vehicle? Unpaid vehicle debt transfers to the new owner in Sweden, not the previous one, and can lead to Kronofogden seizing the car.
- What is the car's full VIN (chassis number)? I need it to verify recalls, ownership and accident history.
- Please provide the most recent service receipt that supports the 'Nyservad' claim and a full service history back several years.
- Has any recall work been performed on this car? Provide documentation or a manufacturer/VIN lookup showing completed campaigns.
- Have you ever had issues with the coolant 'Engine Maintenance Required' warnings or overheating? If so, provide repair invoices.
- Does the power tailgate operate reliably (open/close via switch and remote)? Any known faults or noisy motors?
- Can you provide recent battery/heavy-electrical system checks or evidence of software updates addressing hybrid/electrical issues?
What to check in person
- Never pay a deposit or the full price before you've seen and test-driven the car in person — be wary of pressure to decide immediately ("today only" pricing), or a seller who avoids meeting or an independent inspection.
- Pay by bank transfer or Swish, never cash to someone you haven't met or verified, and complete the registered ownership transfer (ägarbyte) digitally at handover rather than leaving it for later.
- Verify VIN on the car (chassis plate/windshield) matches the seller documentation and run a registry/recall lookup.
- Test-drive focusing on low-speed acceleration for hesitation or jerking; monitor for transmission/ECM warning lights.
- Start-up and warm-up checks: watch for persistent engine warnings, unusual temperature rise or abnormal noises indicating coolant-valve issues.
- Operate the power tailgate several times and listen for grinding or inconsistent behaviour; inspect tailgate hinges/seals.
- Full electrical check: scan for historical/fault codes, inspect battery condition and visible wiring for corrosion, check ABS sensors.
- Request and inspect service receipts (especially recent 'Nyservad'); confirm two keys are present and note service shop details.
- Brakes and suspension check for play/noises (recall item noted for front lower arm cracking on some cars).
